RECAP: Morton and Gee-Gees overpower rival Ravens for home opener win

The Gee-Gees women's soccer team earned their second win in as many games this season, following a 3-1 win over the Carleton Ravens on Wednesday night.

Mikayla Morton paced the offence, scoring all three goals for the Garnet and Grey. 

The victory capped off a special night for the Gee-Gees. The 2018 U SPORTS National Championship banner was officially unveiled at Matt Anthony Field, with alumnus Miranda Smith and University of Ottawa President and Vice-Chancellor Jacques Frémont sharing words with supporter as part of the pregame festivities. 

"Lots to be happy with," said Gee-Gees head coach Steve Johnson following the game. "Our performance today was really good, we had a number of really good performances, some from first year players who stepped on the field and looked like they fit."

It took just three minutes for Morton to tally for the Gee-Gees, sending a header into the back of the net for the first goal of the game.

Carleton scored an equalizer in the 30th minute, making good on their second penalty kick of the game.

"Them having two penalty kicks in the first half created a difficult scenario for our players to cope with," Johnson explained. "But I thought we dealt with it really well. The goal they scored was the only shot on net that they had in the entire first half.

"I don't want to think it affected our performance, but we did come out in the second half I think a little stronger than in the first. We got some of the nerves out of the way."

Morton's second goal of the night came in the 59th minute, courtesy of a free kick directly into the top corner of the net, restoring the lead for the Gee-Gees. 

A header from a few feet out completed the hat trick for Morton and padded the lead as the Gee-Gees clamped down defensively and secured the victory.

"Mikayla had a good game, scoring three goals is what you want a forward to do. She created opportunities for herself to get a couple others as well, I thought she had a real impact on today's performance," Johnson said. 

Kaylane Hogue made her debut in Garnet and Grey, appearing in the starting line-up with fellow rookie Becca LeBlanc.

The new additions to the line-up, from last year's championship winning team are already enhancing the team's chemistry, according to Morton.

"We were like a family, everyone got along on and off the field," she said. "So far, the rookies that have come in, it's off to a great start. It already feels like family."

Up next for the Gee-Gees, they will play a pair of road games this weekend at the University of Toronto and Trent University, before returning to Matt Anthony Field to host the Laurentian Voyageurs on Sept. 14.
