Ontario University Athletics released the All-Star Teams and Major Award winners for women's soccer on Thursday with seven Gee-Gees recognized for the 2017 season. Highlighting the announcement is Hannah Landry, a senior on the Gee-Gees defence, who takes home the OUA East Community Service Award. The Gee-Gees also had four players named to the First All-Star team and two players to the Second All-Star team.
During her five seasons at uOttawa, Landry has become increasingly involved in the advancement of mental health programs at the University. Hailing from Elmsdale, N.S., Landry is the Co-President of the Student Athlete Mental Health Initiative on the uOttawa campus and led a successful proposal to introduce a mental health coordinator for Sports Services. In support of the proposal, Landry ran focus groups with varsity athletes on campus to fill the gaps in mental health services. She is a board member of the uOttawa Standing Committee on Student Wellbeing and acts as VP Communications for the University of Ottawa Mental Health Awareness Society.
An OUA East First Team All-Star in 2015, Landry is an Academic All-Canadian in the Faculty of Health Sciences whose academic resume includes membership in the Canadian Society of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, lab work Case-Finding Algorithm for Depression in the Canadian Armed Forces, and researching the effects of toxicants on the maternal brain. Landry also volunteers through the Minister of Health's office as a Youth Engagement Strategy Co-Planner. Landry started seven games for uOttawa on defence this season and scored two goals and one assist. She has seven goals in her career with the Gee-Gees.
1st Team All-Stars
Kayla DaCosta-Pachecho earns her third straight OUA All-Star nod after another outstanding season at defence for Ottawa. The speedy fourth-year from Gatineau used her height and versatility to both control the back line and move up to provide a attacking presence on the wing. DaCosta-Pacheco, a Health Sciences student, scored two goals and was credited with one assist in ten games played this regular season.
Cooper Lee followed up her uOttawa Rookie of the Year season with her second OUA All-Star award, moving up to the first team for 2017. Extremely dependable and an excellent decision-maker, Lee started 12 matches for Ottawa this season and contributed to the team's OUA East leading 0.53 goals against. A Toronto native, Lee studies Management Information Systems and Analytics.
Katherine Bearne is a First Team All-Star for the second straight season and an All-Star for all three seasons she has played. The fourth-year Physics and Mathematics student from Halifax, N.S. led the Gee-Gees with eight goals this regular season, setting a career high. Bearne started 13 games at midfield for Ottawa this season and also contributed two assists along with superbe defensive play.
Miranda Smith joined the Gee-Gees this season and brought dynamic skills and athleticism at midfield. Her timing and precision in defence as well as decision-making bringing the ball forward contributed largely to Ottawa's success. Hailing from Ottawa, Smith is a fourth-year communications student and scored two goals with two assists this season.
2nd Team All-Stars
Margot Shore started 12 games at keeper in the regular season, picking up five complete game shutouts and sharing one more. The Civil Engineering student is a first-time OUA All-Star in her second season with Ottawa.
Katerine Delev earns an OUA All-Star spot as a rookie and the youngest player on the Gee-Gees team. Consistently impressive at midfield and often showing off her powerful outside shot, Delev started 13 games and provided two goals and one assist. Hailing from Chelsea, Que., Delev is a Management student.
