RECAP: Kamba logs three to help #2 Women’s rugby advance to RSEQ Championship, Gee-Gees clinch nationals berth
The Gee-Gees women's rugby team hosted their crosstown rivals to kick off the RSEQ playoffs. After a 6-0 regular season, Ottawa was excited to hit the pitch for their semi-final meeting.
With a 62-12 victory, the Gee-Gees claim a spot at the U SPORTS National Championship Tournament and the RSEQ Championship game.
Ottawa was first to strike as Anna Dodge touched down early in the opening half. The Carleton Ravens didn't take too long to respond. Capitalizing on a misled pass, the Ravens stole the ball and carried it to the tryzone to take a 7-5 lead at the 10-minute mark.
The rest of the half was all Gee-Gees.
Ketsia Kamba (20' and 37'), Dodge (25'), Tylo Borsboom (28'), Victoria Hough (33'), all contributing to establishing a 36-7 lead going into halftime.
"Carleton wanted to give us a punch in the first minute and kudos to them they always have strong players but at the end of the day we have a great team, we always say we are one team," Kamba said. "We were good on the bounce back after they scored, we had a few good runs."
Kamba found her third try of the game quickly following the halftime break to extend the Gee-Gees lead to 43-7.
"For me it's personal," Kamba said. "My scores were off my teammates setting me up, and we were able to just roll, roll, roll."
The Ravens managed to find another try to cut the Gee-Gees lead, but Sydney Noseworhty, Deborah Oyetoran and Nev Dubois added tries to finish the game.
Ottawa's win advances them to the RSEQ final where they will face off against the Laval Rouge et Or for the sixth consecutive time. Ottawa earns the right to host, welcoming the Rouge et Or on Oct. 19 at Matt Anthony Field.
The Rouge et Or won their semi-final matchup against the Concordia Stingers 17-7 and will look to hand Ottawa their first loss of the season. Tickets for the RSEQ final can be purchased at tickets.geegees.ca
