NEWS: Women’s basketball hires Stephanie Mondou as full-time Assistant Coach
The University of Ottawa women's basketball team is thrilled to welcome Stephanie Mondou as the program's new full-time assistant coach.
"I've had the chance to connect with Gee-Gees alumni from various sports… It's clear that being part of the Gee-Gees family leaves a lasting impact," Mondou said. "That kind of legacy is something I'm proud to now be a part of. I'm really excited to join a program that values development both on and off the court."
From Sorel, QC, Mondou joins the Gee-Gees after two years coaching the Louis-Riel Rebelles and Southwest Advantage AAU teams. She brings championship experience from her time as a U SPORTS athlete, winning a pair of RSEQ titles and the 2016-17 national championship title with the McGill Martlets.
"Having been a student-athlete at the U SPORTS level myself, I have a good understanding of the balance between academic and high-level competition and training. I've experience first-hand the pace, physicality, and what it takes to succeed in U SPORTS," Mondou explained. "With my experience, I hope to support our athletes on and off the court."
Mondou is eager for the opportunity to join Ottawa head coach, Rose-Anne Joly.
"During my playing years, I was mostly coached by men." Mondou said. "Having the chance to coach alongside a woman who had made such a strong mark in the basketball world is truly inspiring… I'm excited to learn from her and contribute to the program she's built."
Outside of basketball, Mondou enjoys staying active through actitivies such as paddleboarding or playing team sports. She also has a creative side, reading and designing.
The Gee-Gees are coming off a U SPORTS bronze medal victory and will look to build on their success with the addition of Mondou.
Mondou is taking on the role following Sarah Besselink, who held the role since the 2021-22 season. Besselink was announced as the head coach of the Calgary Dinos in the spring.
