NEWS: Men’s hockey hires Mathew Thompson as full-time Assistant Coach
The University of Ottawa men's hockey team is excited to welcome Mathew Thompson as the program's new full-time assistant coach.
"I have heard nothing but tremendous things regarding the city of Ottawa, the University as a whole, and the hockey program specifically," Thompson said. "Everyone and everything seem like it is first class, and I can't wait to get started."
From Alliston, ON, Thompson returns to Canada after three seasons as the assistant coach and then associate head coach of his alma mater, Adrian College, in the NCAA III.
Thompson transitioned to coaching after four years with Adrian College and a few seasons in the ECHL.
"The transition happened really fast as I had to retire from playing because of numerous injuries and surgeries," Thompson said. "I have always loved the game and knew immediately when I retired that I wanted to stay involved and fell in love with the coaching side right away."
The upcoming season will mark Thompson's first appearance in U SPORTS but he looks to elevate the University of Ottawa's championship program with his array of experience as both a player and a coach.
"I have been fortunate to work with great coaches throughout my career and taken a lot in. I want to be able to pass that along to the players and staff around me," Thompson explained. "I hope to help the players to achieve their goals, help them become the best players they can be, and ultimately the best young men for the future."
Thompson joins Patrick Grandmaitre's program after their first U CUP championship.
"Patrick is a coach that truly cares about the program and the people that make it up, he is going above and beyond," Thompson said. "I am excited that the program has a history of success, expects success, and I can't wait to contribute."
Outside of hockey, Thompson values his time with his family and girlfriend. He also enjoys golfing with friends.
"I am fortunate to have great relationships, and they have helped me every step of the way in my life," said Thompson.
With Thompson, the Gee-Gees program adds both experience and opportunity from his success at a variety of levels.
Thompson is taking on the role following Justin Stevens, who held the position since the 2023-24 season.
