Powered by a strong performance from Anthony Brodeur, the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees men's golf team sits atop the leaderboard after the first round of the OUA Golf Championship held at Angus Glen Golf Club in Markham, Ont.
Brodeur, a senior from Essex Fells, N.J., who also plays on the men's hockey team, sits in first place in the individual competition after carding a round of 2 under 70. Brodeur was able to work around a double-bogey on the par-3 sixth by making five birdies in his round.
Brodeur is the only competitor to go under par in the opening round and is two strokes ahead of second place. He took home the bronze medal at last year's event.
Nicholas Workun (Ottawa) is in a tie for second with three other golfers. Workun made four birdies in the opening round to finish at even-par. The Gee-Gees Jared Coyle (Manotick, Ont.) is also in the top-10 at 2 over, thanks largely to an eagle on the par-4 fifth.
The 36-hole event features both men's and women's individual competitions and men's and women's team competitions. The combined scores of all five players comprise a school's score in the team competition.
