RECAP: Carleton Ravens snap Gee-Gees’ six-year Panda Game streak
Gathered for the 56th Panda Game, 23,030 fans packed TD Place arena to watch the biggest rivalry in university sports. The Raven's took a 20-14 victory, ending a historic six year streak for the Gee-Gees.
The crowd vocal from start to finish, but it was the fans in red and black who had the last laugh.
Ottawa struck first with a touchdown grab from Robin Collioud. The second quarter touchdown put the Gee-Gees in the lead.
The Ravens managed a touchdown shortly after but failed to snag points on the two-point conversion. With less than two minutes until halftime, Carleton took control of the game.
A great defensive read from the Ravens disrupted a punt from the Gee-Gees. Scooping up the ball, the Ravens defence put another six points on the board. This time, their two-point attempt was a success, and the Ravens took a 14-8 lead into the locker room.
Carleton carried the momentum into the second half, piling on field goals to extend their lead to 20-8.
Even in the final minutes, with things looking bleak, the Gee-Gees continued to fight. A late touchdown catch by Tristan Gilbert-Thibault reignited the Garnet and Grey.
The Gee-Gees defence held strong, and with 25 seconds on the clock, Ottawa's offence was back on the field with a deficit of 20-14 on the board.
Josh Janssen sent a 52-yard bomb to the hands of Collioud. With one last opportunity, the Gee-Gees quarterback launched one last ball into the Carleton endzone.
The ball hit the ground. The game was over, the streak snapped, and the field taken over by a rush of Ravens.
Janssen finished the day with 375 passing yards and two touchdowns. Charles Asselin led the rush with 41 yards on 10 carries, while Collioud was the biggest threat, with 159 receiving yards and a touchdown.
"This is going to be a good tape to turn on and say, who are the consistent performers when the chips are down, and who are not," said Gee-Gees head coach, Marcel Bellefeuille. "We're going to have to meet as a team and get ready, the next one is in six days."
Ottawa is back at Gee-Gees Field on Oct. 11 to welcome the Windsor Lancers in their penultimate regular season game.
