GEE-GEES DEFENCE SHINES IN YORK WIN
Second-year quarterback Wayne Desmond made the most of his first career start, completing 17-of-24 passes for 204 yards and one touchdown as the Ottawa Gee-Gees knocked off the York Lions, 37-3, on Saturday at York Stadium.
Ottawa scored on each of its first four possessions. Kicker Ara Tchobanian connected on field goals of 21 and 29 yards, while full back Marc Lindell registered the Gee-Gees first touchdown on a six-yard run. Desmond then hit receiver Matthew Edgeworth on a 34-yard pass to give Ottawa a 20-0 lead after the first quarter.
In the second, Tchobanian added a 29-yard field goal to put the visitors up 23-0 at the break.
Ottawa scored two touchdowns in the second half - a one-yard run by David Masson in the third and a three-yard run by Justin Hammond in the fourth - to round out the team's scoring.
York's Mike Kosteski registered the Lions only points on the day with a 13-yard field goal in the fourth quarter.
York's Bart Zemanek finished the day completing 13-of-20 passes for 131 yards. Receiver Kevin Walsh had 79 yards on six receptions, while Pearce Akpata was the team's leading rusher with 33 yards on seven carries.
Fourth-year defensive back Robin Legault had a strong showing for the Lions with four tackles, two assists and one interception. Chris Russell added four tackles, three assists and one interception for York.
Masson finished the game with 150 yards on 18 carries and one touchdown for Ottawa, while Edgeworth collected 85 yards on three receptions.
With the victory, the Gee-Gees improve to 3-1, while the Lions fall to 0-4. York hosts Toronto (0-4) next Saturday in the Annual Red and Blue Bowl. Kick-off is scheduled for 2pm at York Stadium. The game will be shown live on the Score.
