OTTAWA ADVANCES TO YATES CUP
OTTAWA - Two touchdowns 2:08 apart in the second quarter proved to be the difference as the third ranked uOttawa Gee-Gees football team downed the Queen's University Golden Gaels 23-10 Saturday in their OUA Yates Cup semi-final game at Frank Clair Stadium.
With the victory, the Gee-Gees will host the 99th Yates Cup championship, presented by Pioneer Petroleums, next Saturday at 1 p.m. at Frank Clair Stadium in a game that will be broadcast nationally on the Score Television Network.
After a scoreless opening quarter, the Gee-Gees struck for 14-points in 2:08 mid-way through the frame. Quarterback Josh Sacobie led Ottawa on a 41-yard drive for the opening score of the game at the 5:31 mark. Sacobie spotted Wayne Desmond open in the endzone for his first career post-season touchdown reception.
Moments later, Ottawa defensive end Tyler Dawe hit Queen's quarterback John Brannagan from behind to force a fumble at the Gaels 15-yard line that was recovered by Eric Chibuluzo. Three plays later, Mike Donnelly bulled his way into the endzone from two-yards out to put Ottawa up 14-0.
The Gee-Gees would go up 15-0 on a single before Ryan Elger got the Gaels on the board in the dying moments of the half.
The score remained that way until Davie Mason cracked open the longest play from scrimmage of the season, an 82-yard touchdown run to ice the game with 2:09 left on the clock.
Ottawa out-gained Queen's 464 yards to 270, as pivot Josh Sacobie completed 19 of 31 passes for 224-yards and a touchdown. John Brannagan went 13-for-31 for 189-yards including a late touchdown pass to Scott Valberg.
Mason was the game's top rusher despite only playing the second half, amassing 129-yards on eight carries, while Mike Donnelly had 86 on 17 attempts. Mike Griffin recorded 19 carries and racked up 87-yards.
