OUA NAMES ITS FOOTBALL ALL-STARS
Hamilton, Ontario - Ontario University Athletics (OUA) announced Tuesday the football All-Star teams for the 2006 season.
The Ottawa Gee-Gees, who finished the regular season with a conference-best 7-1 record, had a total of 11 All-Star selections, including four players on the first-team, to lead all schools. Third-year quarterback Joshua Sacobie (Fredericton, New Brunswick) finished second in the OUA regular season with 1,860 passing yards and ranked tops in the CIS with a 13:5 touchdown-to-interception ratio. He orchestrated an offence that scored 276 points, the most in the OUA and fifth in Canada.
The defending Yates Cup and Vanier Cup champion Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks registered the most number of first-team All-Stars with six, including four on the defensive end. The Hawks are led by the OUA top tackler, Jesse Alexander (Kitchener, Ontario) who totalled 56.5 tackles and three interceptions. Yannick Carter (Pickering, Ontario) is an exciting fourth-year linebacker to watch. He has recorded a CIS-leading 9.5 sacks. The defensive threat from WLU is completed by a strong pair of defensive back, fourth-year defensive back Justin Phillips (Kitchener), who recorded four sacks and Josh Maltin (Sarnia) who registered 33 tackles and one interception.
The Windsor Lancers enjoyed a conference-best three offensive first-team All-Stars, highlighted by Daryl Stephenson (London). The third-year running back totalled 175 carries, 1,140 yards and 11 touchdowns on the ground to become the first player in CIS to run for 1,000 yards or more in three consecutive seasons.
"After a sensational regular season full of parity, it is no surprise to have nine different and talented schools represented on the first-team All-Star list," expressed Lorne Adams, OUA president and Brock University athletic director. "Congratulations are in order to all of the OUA All-Stars. Our conference will be well represented at the national stage."
Nine student-athletes repeated as OUA first-team All-Stars, including 2005-06 J.P. Metras Trophy winner, fourth-year offensive lineman Kyle Koch (Kewatin, Ontario) from the McMaster Marauders.
The 99th edition of the Yates Cup presented by Pioneer Petroleums is scheduled for Saturday at 1 p.m. A total of 21 OUA first-team and second-team All-Stars will be competing in the ultimate game of the season. Host Ottawa Gee-Gees will face Wilfrid Laurier at Frank Clair Stadium in front of a nationally televised audience, live on University Rush on The Score Television Network.
