While the uOttawa Gee-Gees women's hockey season may be over, second-year forward Fannie Desforges, Fournier, Ont., is not hanging up the skates just yet. That's because the RSEQ first team All-Star will be participating in this weekend's Red Bull Crashed Ice World Championship in Québec City, Qué.
Starting on March 17, 2011, Fannie will race down the Crashed Ice course filled with twists, turns, jumps and drops. The first two days, Thursday and Friday, will be qualifications, wherein she will attempt to qualify for Saturday's main event.
In case you have never witnessed such a race, a huge downhill ice course constructed in the heart of Québec City's historic old town has been attracting over 100,000 fans every year since it first debuted in 2006.
For herself, Fannie is ecstatic to be participating this year: "I'm so excited! It's going to be insane. Last year I was there just in the crowd, and it was crazy. It was an amazing atmosphere; there are almost no words to describe it."
She won her chance to participate after finishing with the fastest times at the Ottawa qualifier. Fannie was joined by teammates second-year forward Dominique Lefebvre who participated in last year's race with another teammate Kayla Hottot. Unfortunately for them, they did not move on to this year's main event.
"(Dominique) said not to force it, make sure you skate down the track on your two feet. So I'm going to try it on Thursday with the practice rounds," said Desforges. "I'm just excited. I love adrenaline and that rush is going to be crazy. I know myself; I'm very competitive so I know I'm going to want to push myself to win. Regardless, it's going to be so much fun."
