GAME STORY:
The Gee-Gees had a slow start to their 2010 home opener against rival the Carleton Ravens. The Ravens managed to score two goals in less than a minute into the first period. Hard work from the Gee-Gees resulted in a penalty for Carleton late in the first period; however they could not generate anything from the power play.
A breakaway by forward Fannie Desforges (Fournier, ON) almost resulted in a goal in the second period when Desforges unsuccessfully tried a wrap around. There were three Gee-Gees in the penalty box at one point in the second period, yet uOttawa managed to keep the puck out of the net. Finally the Gee-Gees hard work paid off with a goal in the second period with 55 seconds left by forward Érika Pouliot (St. Joseph de Beauce, QC).
The Gee-Gees really turned the game around in the third period with numerous chances in front of the Raven's net, which materialized in goals from forward Ashley Burrill (Ottawa, ON) and forward Alicia Blomberg (Timmons, ON). However the Gee-Gees momentum was slowed when Carleton scored a short-handed goal in the middle of the third. uOttawa managed to hold off the Ravens from scoring again despite Gee-Gees penalties, which at one point, left the uOttawa at a two player disadvantage.
Forward Fannie Desforges (Fournier, ON) was the star of the game with one assist and one goal that was scored with 3.3 seconds left in the final period leaving the final score as 4 to 3 for the Gee-Gees.
The Gee-Gees were visibly pleased with their results tonight. Burrill said that the game tonight was certainly a change from how the team played in the 2009.
"We are coming back [after the break] and showing other teams they haven't seen what we can do yet," Burrill reasoned, "It feels amazing."
Head coach Miguel Filiatrault agrees.
"At the end of the first half of the season no one was happy. We had team meetings and decided we would start fresh." Filiatrault says of the team's outlook for 2010. Filiatrault also emphasized that it is crucial that his team not fall back into bad habits from the first half of the season. "I like to think of it as Gee-Gees 2.0," Filiatrault jokes.
The Gee-Gees next battle is against Montreal at home on January 16th at 6:00 p.m.
