HEADLINE: Gee-Gees "empty tank" in OT thriller
GAME STORY:
Third-year centre Kayla Hottot battled back from the flu to score twice in regulation and second-year forward Cass Breukelman had the overtime winner in the Gee-Gees 4-3 exhibition win over the Syracuse Orange Sunday afternoon.
"We really wanted to end it on a good note", said Hottot, of the Gee-Gees final game in advance of the Christmas break, "Our goal was to empty the tank."
uOttawa came alive in the third with goals from first-year forward Fannie Desforges, and Hottot's second, tying the game 3-3.
Breukelman's winner came with less than a minute to go in overtime. The Gee-Gees bounced back from a harsh 9-0 defeat to No. 1 McGill Saturday, a game Hottot missed with the flu.
"We were really happy here with how the team bounced back today after the loss last night", said Coach Shelley Coolidge, "It gives us some really good feelings to move forward with and build off of."
Captain Stefanie Marty of Nussbaumen, Switzerland, and Edmonton's Janelle Malcolm scored twice for the Orange.
Syracuse dominated most of the first and second periods - finishing ahead in shots 34-22 - but could not hold off uOttawa's late game surge.
The Gee-Gees return to the ice on January 10th, 2009 against the Concordia Stingers (2:00 p.m.) at the Sports Complex.
