The University of Ottawa is committed to forging a new path for its men's hockey program. "We are committed to the men's hockey program and it has been identified as a market-driven sport within Ontario University Athletics (OUA). Although our program is not currently there yet, we feel that within several years with the support of our alumni, students and the community, our men's hockey team has the potential to be one of our flagship programs," said uOttawa athletic director, Luc Gélineau.
After eight years as head coach of the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees men's hockey team Dave Leger will be leaving the program effective April 30, 2011. Leger joined the Gee-Gees in 2000 as an assistant coach and took over the head coach position in 2003 following the departure of Mickey Goulet. Leger's eight-year tenure as head coach included the team's first trip to the CIS National Championships (2004) in 19 years and a record of 111 wins, 107 losses, 10 ties and 17 OT losses over 245 total games.
On his tenure with the Gee-Gees, Leger remarked, "I am proud of the great effort and sense of teamwork displayed by players, staff, and alumni during my time with the men's hockey program and I will continue to treasure the wonderful relationships that I have made. I feel very positive about the direction in which the program is headed and I look forward to following its continued progress".
"I believe the time is right to make a change," Gélineau said. "We greatly appreciate Dave's commitment to the men's hockey program and to the University of Ottawa, and wish him nothing but success in the future."
The search for a new coach will begin immediately.
