RECAP: Gee-Gees down UPEI, Saint Mary’s, and Cape Breton at Mickey Place

Following an impressive showing in the Mickey Place Tournament at the UPEI, the Gee-Gees men's basketball team continues a perfect start to their U SPORTS preseason.
With a 72-53 win over Concordia in their first U SPORTS preseason affair, the Gee-Gees took to the East Coast to face some more solid competition in advance of the upcoming OUA regular season.
The Gee-Gees took on UPEI, AUS runner-up Saint Mary's, and a talented Cape Breton team over the course of three days in Prince Edward Island.
In game one, the Gee-Gees started slowly, but eventually got their legs under them to the tune of a 66-52 victory. In game one, the Gee-Gees coaching staff showed some confidence in their young talent, with first-year forward Thomas Chilton getting the start and leading the team with 12 points and eight rebounds. Second-year point guard Kevin Civil added 11 points in a solid performance, while Gage Sabean rounded out Gee-Gees scorers in double-figures with 10 points.
Game two against Saint Mary's pitted two teams ranked in the U SPORTS Top 10 each week of last season. Down 25-10 after the first quarter, the Gee-Gees rallied back to win 82-76. Calvin Epistola logged an outstanding 23 points, eight assists, five rebounds, and five steals. 2018-19 OUA Rookie of the Year Guillaume Pépin added 17 points and six rebounds, while Sabean had 11 to close out the win.
Closing out the trip 82-53 win over Cape Breton, the Gee-Gees were powered by balanced performances from nine different scorers. Sabean led the way with a 17-point and 10-rebound double-double. Epistola also had 17 points, while Pépin added 10 points and five rebounds. The Gee-Gees' bench had 33 points in the solid win.
Up next, the Gee-Gees will enjoy Thanksgiving weekend before travelling to Kingston for the Tindall Invitational Tournament at Queen's, where the team will take on the Gaels, Memorial, and Regina from Oct. 17-19.
