Three Gee-Gees football players have been selected to the roster of the 2018 U SPORTS Valero East-West Bowl. The annual game featuring top university football talent, showcases players entering their Canadian Football League draft year.
This year's selections are defensive backs Jamie Harry and Cody Cranston, and receiver Kalem Beaver.
Harry, after his most successful year in garnet and grey, was named a U SPORTS First Team All-Canadian and a First Team OUA All-Star. The third-year cornerback from Lachine, Que., led the OUA with five interceptions, which was good enough to place second overall in the nation. Harry was second on the team with 42 tackles, and also recorded five pass breakups, 2.5 tackles for loss, one sack, one forced fumble, and returned one of his interceptions for a 60-yard touchdown.
Cranston, along with Harry represented the toughest cornerback paring in the OUA. The third-year from Winnipeg, Man., was third in the OUA with three interceptions, for the second consecutive year, one of which, he returned for a touchdown. Cranston also tallied 23 tackles on the season, despite making a switch to the wide side of the field, where he sees less passes directed his way. Cranston's defensive backfield teammate and brother, Ty, was also named to the East-West Bowl two seasons ago.
Beaver, one of the Gee-Gees' elite offensive weapons caught 22 passes for 335 yards and two touchdowns. The third-year receiver from Dartmouth, NS, was ninth in the OUA in all-purpose yards, racking up 860 overall or 107.5 per game. Beaver continues to use his top-flight speed as an asset on kick returns, as well as his ability to get down field in the passing game where he averaged 15.2 yards per catch this season.
The game will take place on May 12 at Université Laval in Quebec City.
