The Gee-Gees football team is proud to announce the recruit of quarterback Sawyer Buettner for the 2018 season. A native of Moose Jaw, Sask., Buettner has spent the past three seasons playing in the Canadian Junior Football League (CJFL) for the Regina Thunder of the Pacific Football Conference (PFC).
With the Thunder, Buettner has amassed career totals of 6,026 yards, 32 touchdowns, and a 64 per cent completion percentage in 24 games played.
Prior to his time in the CJFL, Buettner was an all-star QB for Team Saskatchewan, leading them to the Canada Cup final in 2014. In 2015, he quarterbacked Team Canada to a win over the United States in the International Bowl at AT&T Stadium in Texas.
"I've been following him since meeting him at the Canada Cup in 2014," said Gee-Gees head coach Jamie Barresi. "He was ready to play university football then, but I think he's even more prepared now, he plays with a lot of poise and experience."
Buettner will be joining the Gee-Gees fresh from his best regular season with the Thunder, where he racked up 2,198 yards, 16 touchdowns to five interceptions, averaging 314 yards per game for a completion percentage of 67.4. Buettner led the nation in passing yards and yards per game, despite missing one game due to injury.
"I wouldn't trade my junior football days for anything," said Buettner. "It's a really competitive league, tons of guys move on every year to play university football all across Canada, and I was lucky enough to be one of those guys. I got to mature as a player and a student as well."
Buettner has been taking classes at the University of Regina and will be transferring to uOttawa at the end of the semester to continue his Bachelor of Arts, with aspirations of pursuing a degree in Education in the future.
After a visit to Ottawa earlier this month, the soon-to-be 21-year-old knew that he had found the right fit to take the next step in joining his passion with his education.
"I've always been excited to play university football," he said. "Once I got out for a visit, I really loved the campus and the city, and the guys treated me so well. I'm super excited to get on campus and on to the field."
