Gee-Gees routed by no. 3 Mustangs
The Gee-Gees became the latest victim of the no. 3 ranked team in the country on Saturday afternoon as they were dispatched 83-27 by the Western Mustangs in London. The win moves the Mustangs to a 4-0 start to 2013, while the Gee-Gees fall to 2-2.
Western ran up 424 yards of their total 743 yards of offence on the ground, led by Garret Sanvido. The fourth-year running back posted 180 yards rushing and two touchdowns. Meanwhile, quarterback Will Finch connected with receiver Brian Marshall for three majors through the air, part of a 297-yard day for Finch.
The CIS leader in interceptions, Paul Kruba, returned one of Western's two interceptions on Aaron Colbon for a touchdown at the 6:55 mark of the third quarter, running the score to 67-20 as Western ran away with the second half of the game.
The score stood at 20-10 after the first quarter thanks to a 31-yard touchdown run by Ottawa's Brendan Gillanders. The Gee-Gees drew closer with the first strike of the second quarter when Andrew Mullings finished off a 52-yard scoring drive with a four-yard reception in the end zone.
Ian Stewart led the Gee-Gees with 148 reception yards as the passing offence continued to be effective. Colbon finished the day 24-for-36 with 328 yards.
Western has now posted victories with 50, 71, 53, and 83-point outings this season. Today's loss set the uOttawa record for most points given up in a game.
