Football (1-0 playoffs, 7-1 OUA)
With the regular season over, the OUA announced its All-Star selections for the 2010 season. And given their success, it comes as no surprise that the Gee-Gees have a total of eight well deserved players named as First Team All-Stars.
Leading this class of First Team All-Stars is none other than fourth-year quarterback Brad Sinopoli, Peterborough, Ont. Brad finishes the regular season as the OUA and CIS leader with 301 attempts, 184 completions, 2756 passing yards, 22 touchdowns and an average of 344.5 yards per game.
Joining Brad are his offensive weapons, fifth-year receivers Matt Bolduc, Ottawa, Ont., Cyril Adjeitey, Ghana, and Steven Hughes, Ottawa, Ont. Bolduc led all Gee-Gee receivers with 704 yards and 6 touchdowns, while Hughes was tied for most receptions in the OUA at 57. All three receivers combined for 1952 yards, 139 receptions and 14 touchdowns, thus making them one of the best receiving cores in the country this season.
Rounding out the offensive selections is fifth-year guard Patrick D'Amico, Montreal, Que. While it is difficult to measure an offensive lineman's value solely based on stats, head coach Jean-Philippe is quick to point out that "Pat is very physical as an O lineman that can compete against the best nose tackle in this league and push people around. He's very technical on the pass protection, so he's just the complete offensive lineman."
On special teams, third-year kicker Matthew Falvo, Welland, Ont., and fifth-year cornerback Chayce Elliott, Burnaby, B.C., earn all-star status. Going 18 for 21, Falvo holds the best percentage of field goals made in the OUA at 85.7%. Falvo's longest field goal of the season was 47 yards. Elliott put up some solid numbers for the Gee-Gees, and was often a difference maker this season. He averaged 28.08 yards per game on kick returns, including his longest of the season at 62 yards. Defensively, he contributed 26 tackles (22 solo, 4 assisted) and two interceptions in seven games this season.
On defence, fifth-year defensive tackle Sebastien Tetreault, Granby, Que., was chosen for the second straight year as a First Team All-Star, and his fourth all-star selection in five seasons. He led the Gee-Gees with most sacks with six, and finished the season with a total of 26 tackles (21 solo, 5 assisted).
On behalf of the entire uOttawa Sports Services team, we are very proud to have our athletes recognized. Congratulations to Brad, Matt, Steven, Cyril, Chayce, Matthew, Sébastien and Patrick on your achievement. May this serve as testament to their successes as at team, and may we wish them continued success as they compete for the Yates Cup this weekend against Western on Saturday, November 13, 1:00 p.m. at Frank Clair Stadium (live on The Score).
