The uOttawa Gee-Gees are proud to announce that they have appointed Jean-Philippe Asselin as their football head coach and program manager. Asselin, 28, will assume the position effective immediately, and one he had fulfilled on an interim basis this past season in which he led the Gee-Gees to an OUA best 7-1 record and to their first Yates Cup appearance since 2008.
"After fielding numerous qualified applicants for the position following a national competition, I remain incredibly impressed with Jean-Philippe's level of talent, professionalism, and maturity," said Luc Gélineau, Director of Sports Services for the University of Ottawa.
"It is impossible to ignore the level of success and leadership demonstrated by coach Asselin this past season. We are very fortunate to have such a young and talented person who has flourished within the Gee-Gees family. As such, I believe there is no better person qualified to continue uOttawa's winning football tradition," added Gélineau.
The 28-year-old Quebec City native previously served as an assistant coach and receiver coach with the Gee-Gees from 2007 to 2009 before assuming the interim head coaching position in March 2010. He also suited up for the garnet and grey as a receiver from 2003 through 2006, and won a Yates Cup in his final season.
"I am very happy and honoured to be back as head coach for the uOttawa football team. It's exciting to have the opportunity to keep building on what we achieved last season, and to keep working towards the ultimate goal of bringing home the Vanier Cup," said Asselin.
Coach Asselin will be announcing his coaching staff in the near future.
