Ottawa, ON
uOttawa Gee-Gees second-year defensive back Soonbum Cha, Burlington, Ont., has been named to the World Team of American Football for the second consecutive year. He, along with 44 other players from eight countries and four continents will face off against the U.S. Under 19 National Team at Austin Westlake Stadium in Austin, Texas on Wednesday, February 2, 2011.
The second-year engineering management student was both excited and honoured to have another chance to compete at the international level: "I had a lot fun last year, it was a great experience. It really helped me adjust the American game and everything, and so now for the second time around I'm more hungry to win and play hard," said Soonbum.
Gee-Gees head coach Jean-Philippe Asselin praised Cha for his physical play and good instincts on the ball: "I'm happy for him and the experience he will get. I think he had a great season for us, and this will only help him to comeback next year as abetter player."
"He's a very physical defensive back, he's not the tallest player but very physical, fast, good instincts, and has a lot of potential," added Asselin.
The 2011 Word Team roster is comprised of players who were selected from a provisional list of players nominated by International Federation of American Football (IFAF) federations around the world and will see players representing American Samoa (3), Austria (5), Canada (22), Finland (2), Germany (3), Japan (2), Mexico (1), and Sweden (2). They will be led by University of Western Mustangs head coach Greg Marshall.
