Even though the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees football team is done for this season several of their players are still in the OUA spotlight.
On November 10, six Gee-Gees were recognized for their strong performances in 2009 and named to the league's first or second all-star teams.
"We (uOttawa football program) preach and will always preach team goals over individual achievements but it's always nice to be recognized by your peers, especially in such a competitive year in the OUA," said Gee-Gees head coach, Denis Piché. "On my behalf, the program's and the University of Ottawa, I would like to say, well done gentleman."
Fourth year veterans Cyril Adjeitey (Ghana) and Sébastien Tétreault (Granby, Qué.) were named to the first team. Adjeitey was a member of the first-team offense while Tétreault was selected a first-team defense.
Adjeitey finished the season as one of the league's most exciting offensive threats hauling in 37 passes for 672 yards. The speedy receiver caught 7 touchdown passes during the eight-game regular season, the most by any receiver in the OUA.
"Being named an OUA all-star regardless of first or second team is a great accomplishment," Adjeitey admitted. "It's great to know that the hard work you put into helping your team win is noticed by other coaches around your conference. The accolades are as much a tribute to me as it is a great reflection of our team accomplishments, and without my teammates it really wouldn't have been feasible to be recognized. I am just happy for the other guys. I believe they deserve it very much."
At 6'4" 265 lbs, Tétreault was a mainstay on the Gee-Gees defensive line all season long. The human kinetics major came to the uOttawa program in 2006 after playing CÉGEP football in Quebec with Champlain College.
uOttawa had a larger presence on the OUA's second all-star squad with four representatives including WR Steven Hughes (Ottawa, Ont.), RB Jordan Wilson-Ross (Alliston, Ont.), LB Mike Cornell (Hamilton, Ont.) and CB Chayce Elliott (Burnaby, BC).
Hughes finished 2nd in OUA receiving with 41 catches and 685 yards along with 2 TD receptions.
Wilson-Ross had an outstanding rookie season with the Gee-Gees. The 5'10" 202 lb. running back finished 2nd in OUA rushing with 790 yards rushing yards on 111 carries. Wilson-Ross ran the ball for an average of 112.86 yards per game, putting him at the top of the league in that category.
Cornell (fifth year) and Elliott (fourth year) end their Gee-Gees football careers as OUA all-stars.
"Congratulations to all our all-stars and best of luck to Sébastien and Cyril in the CIS All-Canadian selection process," said Piché.
The all-star teams were selected by the ten coaches from across the OUA.
