The University of Ottawa women's soccer team remain unbeaten this season thanks to back-to-back victories over the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks and the Trent Excalibur this weekend at Matt Anthony Field. The Gee-Gees beat the Ridgebacks 4-0 on Saturday and blanked the Excalibur 4-0 on Sunday.
"No goals conceded, we're really happy with that," said Gee-Gees head coach Steve Johnson. "We've been working on our defence. We're pleased that we didn't make too many mistakes and didn't give up too many opportunities."
Saturday saw the Gee-Gees turn in an impressive performance in the second half. After being held off the scoreboard through the first 60 minutes, Trinity Esprit bagged her first career goal, followed shortly thereafter by Emma Lefebvre.
Morton now has 13 goals on the season and is one away from setting the Gee-Gees record for most goals in a single season. The fourth year from Courtice, Ont., is attempting to break the record held by Pilar Khoury (2013 and 2014) and Deanna Saracino (1999).
"We're really pleased that Emma and Mikayla continue to score," said Johnson. "They've been getting good opportunities from our midfield and our backs and they've been deadly around the net."
Ottawa broke the deadlock with the Excalibur in the 41st minute on Sunday. First year attacker Anna Satterthwaite opened the scoring with a tap-in from inside the box. The Gee-Gees poured it on with the first half coming to a close, as Adriane Devlin scored a show-stopping, long-range effort into the top corner and Lefebvre bagged her netted goal of the weekend.
With Esprit and Satterthwaite's goals, ten different Gee-Gees have now found the back of the net this season.
"We have a lot of talented players," added Johnson. "When we give them opportunities to score, they've shown they can do it. We're looking forward to continued production from a variety of players."
The Gee-Gees are now unbeaten in 15 straight matches at the University of Ottawa. Their last loss at Matt Anthony Field came on August 27, 2017, a span of 763 days.
Ottawa (now 8-0-2, 1st in the OUA East) will travel across town to face the Carleton Ravens (1-5-2, 9th in the OUA East) on Sunday, October 6. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at MNP Park.
