RECAP: Berhe races to 10th at RSEQ Championships

Alex Berhe in race

The Gee-Gees cross country team competed at the RSEQ Championship meet on Saturday and saw great performances from its top finishing student-athletes. The event was hosted by the Montreal Carabins at Maisonneuve Park, across from the Olympic Stadium.

Men's veteran Alex Berhe had the top finish of the day, taking tenth position in the men's 10km event while women's rookie Keili Shepard raced to a 13th place finish on the 8km course. Shepard has had a consistently strong rookie season for the Garnet and Grey, joining the team from Glebe Collegiate this fall. Shepard is pursuing a degree in Biotechnology.

The men's team featured three top 25 finishers as fourth-year Biochemistry student Ziyad El Hankouri and second-year Human Kinetics student Nicolas Roberts added solid backup to Berhe's finish. Further down in the field, the Gee-Gees trio of Graeme McConnell, Julien Santini, and Robbie Mitchell all crossed the line together at the 35:47 mark.

Behind Shepard's strong performance, third-year Rebecca Brennan added a 26th place finish as part of a group finishing right around the 32-minute mark, with second-year team member but fifth-year student Samantha Klus and first-year Biochemistry student Jenna Rossi crossing together just fifteen seconds later.

The Gee-Gees had 14 women competing in the field of 95 and 11 men among the 99 men's competitors. The team was not officially ranked in the team standings as it is not eligible to officially compete at the RSEQ championships.
