This August, the Gee-Gees men's basketball team will continue their tradition taking on NCAA competition in summer exhibition play. A group of four programs will make their way north of the border to take on the Gee-Gees and other U SPORTS institutions to prepare for the upcoming season.

On Aug. 5, the slate of games will kick off with a matchup against the  Cincinnati Bearcats in Montreal at Collège Jean-de-Brébeuf. Last season, the Bearcats posted a 31-5 overall record en route to a second round finish at the NCAA Tournament. The Bearcats, who were ranked as high as fifth in the nation last year, are coached by Mick Cronin. The two teams have met one time before, during Cincinnati's trip to Ottawa in 2010, which resulted in a 79-57 loss for the Gee-Gees.

The Cincinnati game is the first of two games to be played at Brébeuf this season, with the next coming less than a week later on Aug. 10, when the Gee-Gees will take on the Vermont Catamounts. After an NCAA tournament appearance in 2016-17, Vermont posted a 27-8 overall record last season, falling just short of the tournament. The Catamounts accepted a place in the NIT, but were unable to advance past the first round. Last time the teams met was in 2014, when the Gee-Gees defeated the Catamounts 73-66 at Montpetit Hall.

The two games at Brébeuf will be a familiar setting for a pair of new Gee-Gees that are alumni of the Dynamiques program. Guillaume Pépin and Olivier Cadieux will play their first games in garnet and grey in their Cégep gym, while it will be a similarly familiar venue for Brandon Robinson and recruit Kevin Civil, who are also natives of Montreal.

Montpetit Hall will see its first action of the young season on Aug. 9, when the Gee-Gees welcome the Ole Miss Rebels. Last season, the Rebels had a disappointing year by program standards, finishing 12-20 overall after making the quarterfinals of the NIT the prior season. Ole Miss' last tournament appearance was in 2015 and heading into 2018 there is a restored hope in Oxford, Miss. Newly appointed veteran head coach Kermit Davis hopes to bring his winning ways to the program from his last job at Middle Tennessee, where he guided the team league titles in seven of his last nine years.

The final game will see the Gee-Gees taking on the South Dakota State Jackrabbits at Montpetit on Aug. 11. The Jackrabbits are fresh from a 28-7 record and their third consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance and fifth in seven seasons. South Dakota State returns their top two scorers from last season, including senior forward Mike Daum, who was a finalist for the Karl Malone Power Forward of the Year award last year. Star freshman guard David Jenkins (Summit League Freshman of the Year) returns for his second season and will test the defensive prowess of a strong Gee-Gees front court led by Robinson and Calvin Epistola.

The Gee-Gees are 5-3 against Division I competition in the past two seasons with wins over Canisius, New Hampshire, Norfolk State, Boise State, and Liberty.

Tickets to the two games at uOttawa are free of charge. Baoth games will be webcast from Montpetit Hall.
