On May 11, three Gee-Gees football players participated in the annual U SPORTS East-West Bowl. The event places the top prospects of the following year's CFL Draft on one field for an opportunity to showcase their talents to their potential new teams.
Defensive linemen Réshaan Davis and Tramayne Stephen and defensive back Alex Douglas each reflected on their week following Saturday's game.
On the overall experience of the week: The experience was surreal; you get to practice along with upcoming All-Stars. You learn a lot from playing against some of the best players in the country, you have to rise up to meet them and I thought it was a great opportunity for me and my teammates.
Mindset going into the summer and draft year: When you get this opportunity it teaches you a lot of stuff to work on. I feel like I know what I have to focus on for my draft year and I'm looking forward to the whole process.
On opportunity to share experience with two teammates: It's the best feeling, I have the support of all of my fellow Gee-Gees, and having two guys that I play with next to me really boosts my confidence and reminds me that they're here with me and have my back.
Tramayne Stephen (2 tackles):
On the opportunity to play amongst top players in the country: The opportunity to be here was a blessing, because you're sharing the field with the top prospects for next year's draft. There's some really great guys here and you get to make some new friends from different schools. I was just blessed to have the opportunity.
On the experience throughout the week: There were some good challenges with the practices, learning new information, techniques, and a new playbook. By the third day, everything clicked and we were just playing, we had the joint practice and you could get a feel for your opponents.
On playing alongside teammates: It was great to be out there with my guys and it was good for us to get some experience playing with different people on defence. It was special to go through it together, it felt like we were just back playing together at Lees.
Alex Douglas (1 tackle):
On overall experience: I had big expectations coming in, the week of practice was great and competition was high. All in all, it was a really amazing experience, I'm happy to have been able to be a part of it and can't wait for the upcoming season.
On representing Gee-Gees defensive backs: With the Gee-Gees, I think we have one of the most polished defensive back groups in the country, so coming in I had confidence that I was competing at a high level already. Today, I think I had a good day in coverage and I was able to make some plays throughout the week that stood out. I learned a lot this week, I think I'm taking away some good things to work on over the summer. I'm really appreciative for all of the coaching and hopefully I can apply it and have a good season that leads into a combine invitation and getting picked in the draft.
On support received: It was very special to have my family and friends all here, with a bunch of the guys on the team coming to support. I feel that all of Gee-Gee Nation was behind me here and felt a lot of love. It's overwhelming, I really appreciate everyone coming out to support, it was a lot of fun.
The West team won the game 35-17.
