Gee-Gees linebacker off to Bobsleigh Canada skeleton evaluation camp
James McNaughton's explosiveness will be evaluated by Bobsleigh Canada for one week, starting Friday in Calgary, for possible inclusion on a future Winter Olympics team.
The stocky, six-one, 220-pound linebacker from Newmarket, Ont., has surprised himself by advancing to a national skeleton development camp at Canada Olympic Park August 14-21, following a successful showing at a walk-on talent identification camp at York University in late July.
"I'm so fresh to it. I have never pushed a sled before," said McNaughton, who will be joined by two CIS football friends for the exciting and unplanned odyssey.
"It's right out of nowhere. I had no clue I would ever be doing this," McNaughton said. "It's pretty exciting to say the least."
With 22 career tackles over three seasons with the Gee-Gees, McNaughton will return two days prior to the start of uOttawa football's 2009 training camp August 24th, looking to leave a nagging right leg injury that kept him out of much of last season behind.
"Training for football is training for bobsledding. Quick explosive bursts,' said McNaughton.
"This is a great opportunity but I am still chomping at the bit to get on the field."
