The University of Ottawa once again has four teams ranked in the national Top Ten this week, with the addition of the men's and women's swim teams earning rankings in the first poll of the season. The Garnet and Grey have now had eight programs ranked in the 2019-2020 season.
Both the men's and women's basketball teams swept the opening weekend of regular season play and hold steady at their respective rankings from last week. The women's team, ranked no. 2 in the nation, was simply dominant in its defeat of Laurier and Waterloo, both by over 35 points. The Gee-Gees shot 47.7 per cent from the field, which ranks second in OUA. Seven different players scored in double-digits over the two games, led by a 21-point performance by Katherine Follis. On the men's side no. 3 ranked Ottawa earned a win over a Top Ten opponent on Friday by dispatching the no. 6 ranked Laurier Golden Hawks, 80-72. Senior guard Calvin Epistola tallied 31 points in the win, and followed up with 21 in Saturday's win over Waterloo.
The women's swimming team is ranked at no. 7 in the nation with the men ranked at no. 8 following the first RSEQ Cup meet. Contributions from seniors and newcomers on the women's team, highlighted by a new team record in the 4x50m relay, helped lift the Gee-Gees point total. The women are chasing McGill in the RSEQ standings, while the men are looking to close the gap with Montreal and hold off the Rouge et Or from Laval. The next RSEQ Cup event is on November 24 at Laval.
